ABOUT THE CULTURE/LIFE
- British culture differs in some ways from German culture. The cars in the UK drive on the left side of the road. The cars here in Germany, however, are on the right side of the road. In the UK the people use yards and not meters. In the United Kingdom, people pay with a currency called a pound. Pound is worth more than Euro. Britain is very proud of its nation and its traditions, the royal family is living there. The queen does not rule politics. In England, there is a policy led by a parliament and a prime minister. In the UK, traditional dishes includes afternoon tea and fried bacon for breakfast. From Great Britain come famous authors like William Shakespeare or singers like the Beatles. In Germany we never had singers who were as famous as the Beatles.
ABOUT THE BREXIT
- Brexit is a word combination of "Britain" and "Exit". Brits do not feel like Europeans because of their culture and they had no financial advantage when they were in the EU. Because of the exit, Britain can keep more of his own money. In 2014, they paid 11 billion euros to the European Union.
- So they wanted to get out of the EU. 52% of voters were in favor of leaving the EU. The results were announced on 23 June 2016. After the results, the Prime Minister “David Cameron” decided to resign. Then Theresa May got the office. She campaigned for the Brexit.
- By the exit of Britain one expects financial problems. Every household lacks around 5300 euros a year because of the exit. In addition, one must assume that other countries are inspired by england and also get out of the eu.
- In addition, Germany is missing the most important trading partner. If Germany sells fewer cars to England, the German export suffers very much. If fewer cars are sold, less has to be produced. As a result, jobs could be lost.
ABOUT THE SCHOOL
- The children in England are already enrolled at school with 5 years. In Germany you will go to school at the age of 6 or 7 years. The so-called primary school starts at 9 o'clock in the morning and ends at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. The school corresponds to a "Grundschule" in Germany. The secondary school in England corresponds to a “weiterführende Schule" in Germany. Classes at Secondary School begin at 8:45am. The schools in Germany start at 8 am and the primary school ends at 12:45 noon. Since the Wilhelm-Bracke-Gesamtschule is a full-time school, it ends at 15:45. In addition, the students wear uniforms in British schools. The students in Germany can wear what they want. There are also differences in the grades. There are letters in British schools and German schools have numbers.
My opinion:
- I think it would be difficult for me to use the roads in the UK because the cars drive on the left side of the road and not on the right. The school is different, especially the school uniform. However I do not think there would be any problem for me if I have to wear a school uniform. It would be nice to sleep longer in the morning before school and that's possible in British schools. I can not say anything against the British traditions: fried bacon for breakfast and after lunch a cup of tea with a biscuit makes it easy to live. If I would move to the UK I would probably miss my friends and I would probably have a language problem as well. But if I would live in England for a while, I could speak English fluently and that can open some doors, especially in my professional life.
